New national standards for food safety about the Stainless steel cookware is lowered
According to the Business News, the new national standard for the stainless steel cookware was issued recently. It is noted that the standard has actually been lowered as the content of the manganese is not limited, which has stirred a great concern among the public. Two months ago, the quality of “supor” attracted great attention and this event has been gradually softened due to promulgation of the new national standards for food safety about stainless steel cookware. The new national standards failed to give the incentive of manganese element content limitations which has raise heated debates before. Experts say the manganese contained in stainless steel of is basically harmless to human body, but they remind consumers that stainless steel appliances is not suitable to long-term broth or long-term storage of water and salty foods.
Nothing about the manganese is mentioned in the new national standards.
On December 21, the national food safety standards for stainless steel products (GB9684-2011) (hereinafter referred to as “the new national standard”) was published and implemented. New national standards is applicable to stainless steel food containers and tools, as well as equipments for food production and management, in which the migration of nickel, cadmium, arsenic and other heavy metal in stainless steel has been set clearly.
Previous to the publication of the new national standards, during the checks, Harbin city industrial and commercial sectors found that 81 models of “supor” stainless-steel containers which did not pass the check as there was an excessive manganese and insufficient nickel content in compliance issues.
Old national standards have made restrictions in respect of the grade of stainless steel used for the provision, neither of these grades of stainless steel containing manganese.
This has been served as basis for the Harbin industrial and commercial sectors to check. While the new national standards have relaxed the restrictions on the scope that the stainless steel material can be used and did not provide regulations on the specific grades of stainless steel; and the amount of metal transfer limit has neither involved the manganese.
Some insiders of the stainless steel cookware believe that once the new standards have been introduced and implemented, professional supervision must be strengthened in order to better protect the interests of consumers. Anyone, it is neither feasible nor reasonable to depend on the ethics of the manufacturers’ to guarantee the safety of these cookware. As the ultimate goal of them are the profit margins, thus some may take the advantage as loopholes.
Ministry of health food safety coordinating food safety standards and health inspection Bureau Director Zhang Xudong explained that manganese is one of the essential trace elements, suitable manganese intake for adults is 3.5 mg/day; where the stainless steel products in conformity with the relevant national standards, the migration of manganese levels do not cause health damage; except for certain countries, other international organizations and appropriate national migration of manganese are not regulated.
